Dr Ambedkar Day
Saturday 9 October 2021 – Sunday 10 October 2021
Join us for a day getting to know the extraordinary man that was Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.
Dr Ambedkar was born into a Dalit caste in India in 1891and considered an "untouchable" by the other castes, he was therefore subjected to discrimination and harsh treatment.
Despite these unfavourable beginnings, Ambedkar, quite remarkably finished school (the only child from a Dalit caste enrolled in the school) and went on to University in Bombay, and post-graduate education in USA and UK. Ambedkar returned to India and drafted India's constitution.
Ambedkar's social reformation work for Dalit people culminated in his encouraging them to covert from Hinduism to Buddhism - which did not have any such caste system.
Ambedkar is now highly venerated in India (and within the Triratna community) by those whose lives were improved by his tireless work for the Dalit people and he is fondly recalled with the chant "Jai Bhim!" which means 'victory to Bhim'
